After bringing World Grand Prix to Dubai last year for the first time, a date has been set for top ranked players to return for a second annual event in the city in May of this year. Last year’s grand success has secured the tournament’s standing and eight confirmed competitors including 2013’s contest champion, Michael van Gerwen, will join together to create this season’s first World Series event.
On May 29th and 30th, Dave Chisnall and Peter Wright are set to attend for the first time, assembling at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium along with 16-time world champion Phil Taylor, 5-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld, Simon Whitlock, Adrian Lewis and James Wade all of whom were automatic selections based on their top standings in the season’s PDC Order of Merit.
Van Barneveld made it to the finals last year before his ultimate defeat to fellow Dutchman van Gerwen and both are looking very forward to squaring off again in this year’s event. Van Gerwen is excited to not only defend his title but to also continue to enhance the profile of darts in this fairly new geographical location. He cites the event as having been rather well received in Dubai and expresses his approval of Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium as the venue. The complex was last year’s exclusive partner and the tournament’s success has been instrumental in securing their sponsorship for both this year and next. Sixt Car hire will also return in sponsoring for a second year. In addition, the event’s broad success has also attracted Qantas and JW Marriot as Official Partners supporting the event, virtually guaranteeing the future realization of this becoming an annual competition.
There is already a growing anticipation with fans and media outlets are rallying to broadcast the event for those who cannot attend. Dubai Sports TV and OSN will provide live broadcast. Other media partners include 7 Days, Time Out and Radio 2. This is bound to be a well-publicized and celebrated event and will establish the game in the region to grow the sport worldwide.
Ticket sales have already begun and fans 21 and over can purchase tickets online at Time Out Tickets or at Irish Village at +971 (0)4 239 5000. Corporate Tables will be available including all Food and Beverages and can be purchased at the same ticket outlets upon request.
The schedule of events will be as follows:
Thursday, May 29th, 2014 – Quarter Finals
Friday May 30th, 2014 – Semi-Finals and Finals
Semi-Finals & Final
While this is the first World Series of Darts event that is currently scheduled, the Premier Darts Corporation has stated that it will announcing the details of other event in this series in the weeks and months to come to take place at a later time in 2014.
